MEMBERS of a Northside group were celebrating recently after winning an award for their environmental work.

Bull Island Action Group scooped the Clean Coasts Group – Long Term Contribution Award at the An Taisce Clean Coasts Symposium and Merit Awards ceremony which took place at the Royal College of Surgeons, St Stephen’s Green.

An Taisce’s Environmental Education Unit operates the annual Clean Coasts Programme. Through Coastcare it aims to encourage communities to learn about, manage, conserve and enhance Ireland’s wonderful natural resources.

This year’s awards ceremony was the biggest yet recognising the substantial growth of An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme over the past number of years.

The awards recognise the invaluable work done by committed volunteers across the country on a daily basis protecting and restoring Ireland’s beautiful coastline.

Minister of State for the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley, presented the awards.

“This is a positive example, to all, of how communities can work together to improve their local environment and in doing so provide an economic boost by enhancing the tourist potential of their coastal communities,

? he said.

Patricia Oliver, An Taisce, Education Director, said:

“We are very proud of the work of An Taisce’s Coastcare groups who volunteer all year round to protect their local coastal area.

“We are delighted that, with the support of Coca-Cola, we have an opportunity in these Clean Clean Coast Awards to highlight their efforts and celebrate their achievements.
