THE shocking slaughter of an abandoned horse in Tallaght last week has caused widespread revulsion and led to calls for more controls to be put in place.

Hardened DSPCA workers expressed their outright condemnation and shock at the brutal killing of the horse that died from extensive injuries after it was reportedly doused with petrol and set alight.

According to the society, it is one of the worst cases the charity’s inspectors have experienced.

The incident, which is being investigated by the gardai, took place in an area adjacent to the Luas in Tallaght.

Five other horses in the vicinity were moved to safety by agents of the local authority with Garda assistance.

Brian Gillen, the CEO of the DSPCA, said they were extremely concerned by what he described as a deeply sinister development.

“The horrendous death that this horse endured is unimaginable,

? he said.

“While we encounter many horrific cruelty and neglect cases with regard to abandoned horses, we have never seen such levels of deliberate and depraved cruelty.

He added:

“This awful incident only reinforces the plight of abandoned horses that are roaming across the Dublin landscape.

“We are asking all the local authorities to take immediate steps to put a stop to this barbaric behaviour with the removal of abandoned horses to safekeeping.

The DSPCA circulated images of the remains of the burnt horse but Southside People has deemed them too graphic for publication.

The story prompted an outpouring of disgust after it broke on our Facebook page last Thursday.

Readers told of their horror after reading of the horse’s plight.

“Sick, sick, sick!

? declared one.

“Disgusted, and saddened by humanity.

“What is the world coming to?

? added another.

“I hope they are caught and justice is served.

“What is wrong with some people, this is just so wicked,

? stated one reader.
