SPEEDY students from Gaelscoil Uí Earcáin on Glasnaon Road in Finglas took part in a record breaking attempt last week in one of the world’s fastest growing sports.

The local youngsters played their part in the attempt to beat the world record at Sport Stacking, an exciting event where teams or individuals stack and un-stack specially designed plastic cups in a pre-determined sequence in a race against the clock.

The Finglas students were amongst thousands of participants from all around the world taking part in what was described as the largest ever global sport stacking event.

The event took place on Guinness World Records Day and sports stackers from different countries were up-stacking and down-stacking various pyramids in prescribed patterns at lightning speed for at least 30 minutes.

Last year, 483,658 stackers participated to break the previous year’s

‘Stack up’ record of 412,259. Once again, tens of thousands of stackers contributed their stacking skills from across the United States and around the world in countries such as Hungary, Germany, Israel, South Korea, New Zealand, Columbia, and Taiwan.

Bob Fox, WSSA Founder and CEO, said the Guinness event was a wonderful way to bring together sport stackers across the globe.

“Sport stacking is an activity enjoyed by all ages and cultures,

? he said.

“It promotes hand-eye coordination, fitness, teamwork, speed and lots of fun. This is the eighth year we’ve teamed up with Guinness World Records, and we’re excited to have another shot at breaking a world record.

Gaelscoil Uí Earcáin was one of only three Irish schools in Ireland that took part in last week’s event.
