MANY Northsiders will have fond memories of Dick the Barber who used to snip away at their hair in his quirky salon, upstairs over the shops at St Pappin’s Road, Glasnevin.

Dick Brown attracted customers not just from the immediate local area around Glasnevin, but from further afield in Finglas and Ballymun.

Dick was a true local legend, who took no nonsense from unruly youngsters who sat waiting for their turn on the old, red car seats borrowed from the garage below.

Getting the short, back and sides was a bargain at Dick’s and at one stage youngsters in Ballymun fondly referred to the salon as

‘Haircut 100’, to reflect the £1 price Dick charged.

Sadly, Dick was forced to retire earlier this year due to a fall, but two weeks before he put away his scissors for good local photographer, Robert Murphy, managed to take some great pictures of Dick at work.

The images are now on display at The Ivy House, Drumcondra, until October 29 for anybody who wants to take a walk down memory lane.
