Why I joined Sinn Féin – Chris Andrews
Dublin People 13 Sep 2013
SOUTHSIDE politician Chris Andrews’ decision to join Sinn Fein raised many eyebrows recently.

The former Fianna Fail TD left the party after the infamous
‘Twittergate’ saga in August 2012.
However, his latest move came as a surprise to many.
Sinn Féin’s Aengus Ã? Snodaigh welcomed Mr Andrews onboard, pointing out that both of them had worked on campaigns together and were shipmates on the 2008 and 2011
‘freedom flotillas’ to Gaza.
“I have known Chris for a long time and regard him a person genuinely committed to building a better country for all our citizens,
? Deputy O Snodaigh said.
However, when asked on RTE Radio if Mr Andrews’ departure was a loss to Fianna Fail, party leader Micheal Martin merely replied
‘no’.
In an opinion piece written exclusively for Southside People this week, the controversial politician explains his own reasons behind the move to Sinn Fein.
He acknowledges that there has been considerable media attention following his decision, which he describes as
“understandable
? given that his family has been involved with Fianna Fail since its foundation.
He expresses his disillusionment with the party and admits leaving
“with bad feeling on both sides
?.
“It had become very clear to me that Fianna Fail no longer represented the ideals or values of the party’s founders, including my grandfather,
? he writes.
“In particular I was unhappy at how distant Fianna Fáil had become from the communities and ordinary people it had originally sought to represent and who were and are still suffering the brunt of the economic problems in the country.
?
He fully explains his reasons for joining Sinn Fein, as he firmly believes the party is
“genuinely committed to pursuing the political, social and economic change that is now needed in Ireland
?.
“My decision was particularly influenced by Sinn Féin’s involvement in genuine grassroots community politics; its role in the Peace Process; its strong commitment to a united Ireland; as well as its commitment to international solidarity,
? he writes.
“I believe Sinn Fein’s progressive policy platform reflects the type of thinking that is now required for this country to chart a course out of its current difficulties.
