A CCTV camera in Finglas that was rumoured to have been shot at by criminals in order to render it inoperable is to replaced and protected from future damage.
The camera in Finglas West was installed earlier this year following lobbying by local residents but within weeks it was damaged beyond use.
A small hole was discovered in a metal box protecting the camera, sparking rumours that it may have been shot at. However, while gardai acknowledge the camera was criminally damaged they have been unable to confirm if it was caused by gunfire.
A replacement camera has now been purchased and an application made to Dublin City Council to carry out works to prevent any future damage.
Chairperson of the Finglas and Ballymun Policing Committee, Cllr Paul McAuliffe (FF), says that the camera should be replaced and protected
“regardless of the cost
?.
“I welcome the council’s decision to reinstall the camera and protect it further,
? he said.
“This camera was deliberately removed because it was putting pressure on those involved in criminal activity. Society cannot let criminals win in situations like this and we need to send a message that the rule of law applies.
?
Sinn Fein TD Dessie Ellis said it was essential that the camera be replaced.
“For many years Sinn Féin, local residents and others have campaigned for this camera,
? he said.
“It is essential that it be replaced as it’s a necessary tool in combatting crime in this general area.
