Are we making a royal fuss over British Monarchy?

Making world headlines: Kate and William

As a nation, are we too obsessed with the British Monarchy? While the world celebrated the safe arrival of the royal baby last week, we asked our Facebook friends if the widespread coverage of the event in the Irish media was justified? Here’s an edited selection of some of the comments we received.

Sharon Donoghue Murphy: They are a nice couple for royals, almost like Andrew and Fergie in the old days. But maybe forget who they are and share that beauty of the joy of a new life.

Francesca Fullin Bovone: It’s not an Irish thing, don’t worry! It’s the same all over – even here in Italy.

Linda Brogan: People suffering in our own country. Disgraceful!

Tricia Carroll: Not the least bit interested. I’m sick of hearing about it. It’s not as if she’s the first woman to give birth. Poor Eve had to give birth and there were no hospitals or anything else except Adam to help her.

Caro Carolina: I don’t think the Irish nation is obsessed with the Royals but I do think the media is. I work in a firm with over 80 other men and women, yet not once this week or last week did I hear the Royal family mentioned. However, I couldn’t pick up a paper that didn’t have them splashed all over it so it would make you wonder exactly who is obsessed with them.

Catherine Byrne: New babies and a chance to snoop in other people’s lives – it’s great, a real life soap opera! Plus we get to watch from a distance and shake our heads in wonder at the antics of the British public.

Marie Broderick: I have to say Diana was and her sons are the only Royals who are half way ok. I really can’t stand the rest of them, particularly Charles. If the UK want to go mad over this it’s their own business.

Marian Doherty: Aww I’ve watched it for the past two days. It’s been great entertainment. They’re a young couple starting off in life and I for one wish them well. The past is the past – it’s called that for a reason! A down to earth couple who deserve every happiness, as do all the new mums out there.

Lisa Byrne: I kind of care coz even though we have this hatred for the royals of past times we’ve still been raised looking at Wills and Harry and Diana. We were upset when she died so we’re just interested when he has his first baby, that’s it.

Alan Bird: What royal birth?

Jim Maguire: I’m actually quite interested now, if I’m being honest. Possibly because it’s the only ‘news’ that is on right now. Looking forward to normal viewing now, though. It’s going to look like most other babies really.

Anne-Marie Dolan: Media coverage was way over the top.

Hazel Duffy: Way over the top. Who cares, to be honest. Most people have gone and had babies and not a word really about it. People have not much of a life if they’re obsessed with Kate and William’s baby

Suzy Bevan: I think we are a tad over obsessed with the royal womb, to be honest. Kate got the life she aspired to and good luck to her. I thought the Royal Family were a lot more interesting when Diana was making a holy show of Charles at every opportunity.

Danielle Moran: It’s not every day there’s a royal baby born so let them enjoy it, I suppose

Mark Carolan: It’s all over the top. Who cares?

Leeann Delaney: Over the top.

Paddy Ashe: Everybody should enjoy – it’s great news.

Fiona King: What a great couple! As much loved as Diana.

Pamela McEnery Quinn: Over the top. Fed up with it now.

Brian Byrne: It seems to me that the media are making a bigger fuss about things than the couple themselves. It’s nice to see that they kept the birth from the media for four hours. Congrats to ’em all the same for a healthy baby and safe delivery and 10 fingers and 10 toes.

Marianne Garety: Depends on your point of view I suppose!

Ciarán Delaney: Ask me another question!
