Motorway Madness!
Dublin People 08 Jun 2013
It was reported last week that it could cost as much as
?¬6.50 to use the M50 as part of a plan to ease congestion at peak times. We asked our Facebook followers for their views on the issue. Needless to say they weren’t too happy about it. Here’s an edited selection of some of the comments we received.
Claire Kane: Stupid! It will ease congestion on the M50 but increase it in the city centre. Who comes up with these ideas?
Gillean Guy: Stupid move. They’ll just push traffic back onto the already congested roads. When is the stupidity going to end in this country?
Dave Brennan: I reckon get rid of the bloody toll altogether.
Marian Morrissey: They’ll all be going back to using the back roads and who would blame them? It’s hard to run a car with tax etc.
Deirdre Madill: So even if you find a job, you could not afford to travel there.
Nicola McCabe: A disgrace!
Aaron Canavan: It’s another money making scheme from our Government to screw us once more with taxes. They announced another five toll spots on radio today. I’d love to emigrate; hate our Government and country. Bankers and overpaid politicians got us into this mess; now we are taking the hikes for it. Should be ashamed of themselves.
Nessa Duffy: Nightmare. Petrol, road tax etc. It will cost a fortune to go to work. I for one will be back on the old road. Have reduced the size of my car to bring down the tax. Got it gas converted to bring down the fuel cost. Changed my insurance company to get it cheaper. Now they are tolling me off the bloody road. Aaaaah! We are taxed and regulated out of existence. When will enough be enough? Fed up with morons making moronic decisions. Abolishing the Seanad is next so that they don’t have anyone to keep their mad ideas and laws in check. I am close to giving up.
Collette O’Toole: It’s going to increase traffic in the city.
Des Brennan: A load of bull. Get your priorities right and look after the people first.
Brian Byrne: It’s a load of spin. With so many unemployed and people leaving the country, less people are using the M50. They just want to bring the takings back up. Don’t use it for a week and let them know what you think of their bad idea.
Michelle White: Won’t be using it anymore, nor will anybody I know.
Theresa Murphy: Mad.
Linda Burgess: Not a hope in hell would I pay that! We pay enough on road tax and petrol.
Frances Mansfield: No, I would probably go through town or get the bus to the airport. It does not make sense. It was built to avoid congestion in town and the surrounding area. Then the barriers were removed to avoid congestion and now they want people to stop using the M50. It defeats the purpose. Look what happened with the M3. There are two tolls on it and people are not using it. It is costing the taxpayer money. If it were cheaper then more people would use the M3.
Tamara Walker: I don’t pay the
?¬3, why would I pay
?¬6.50? This country is robbing us blind.
Denise Nic Mhathúna: I couldn’t believe their lame excuse for this: “It’s to stop congestion on the M50 and to get drivers to use other roads.” Please, it’s just another way to get back some of the money they lost.
Anthony Lyons: They’ll only turn it into another fast lane for the rich and famous with the average commuter using smaller routes and more petrol.
Deirdre Ward: A big fat NO.
Lynn McDonald: The M50 was built to ease congestion in the city. Now they want us to use the city to ease congestion on the M50. Am I the only one missing something here?
Rose Henderson Costello: Am I missing something? I thought they built the M50 to take traffic out of the residential areas. And what will this do? Oh yes, I know what road I will take and it won’t be the M50!
