A 68-year-old fitness fanatic has been able to avoid having metal rods inserted into her spine by learning a set of very unique exercises.

Corin O’Doherty, from Clondalkin, had always been very fit and active throughout her life and was passionate about keeping fit and healthy and trying to stay as young as possible.

Then she started to experience severe pain around her shoulder blades and struggled to spend more than 10 minutes at a dance class before keeling over.

Corin became extremely concerned about the sudden onset of pain and decided to make an appointment to see a local chiropractor. The weekly adjustments seemed to help on a short term basis but the pain would always return and was gradually getting worse.

Corin knew that she was getting older and that the pain could be due to degenerative changes but she was not convinced that there was not something more serious going on.

In the end she decided to see her GP. It was at this stage she received the devastating news that she had scoliosis and her whole life was thrown into turmoil.

Scoliosis causes the spine to excessively curve sideways. The condition affects more than four per cent of the population and if left untreated can lead to fatal heart and lung problems.

Current treatment in this country is to wait until the curve becomes so severe, that the only option left is to operate.

The major operation is an incredibly risky procedure which involves metal rods being inserted either side of the spine, before it is fused solid.

Corin had always loved dancing and took pride in her health being in immaculate condition and she enjoyed spending hours dancing around the house.

But the pain had got to the point where she was only able to dance very occasionally due to the discomfort which hung around for days after she even moved a little too quickly.

Corin had no idea what to do. She felt as though she was a 90-year-old living in a 60-year-old body. She was terrified at the prospect of having surgery but she was paranoid that her back was getting worse.

It was around this time that she discovered Scoliosis SOS.

Founded and run by Erika Maude, who has Scoliosis herself, the clinic opened seven years ago and has since brought relief to hundreds of sufferers.

Located in central London, it is the only clinic in the world to offer treatment following the ScolioGold method, which is the combination of internationally renowned non-surgical treatments, that have been practiced separately in Europe for several decades.

Corin had never felt so relieved in her life. She had finally found something that could help to get her pain under control. So after an initial consultation and a quick look at other patients exercising Corin booked on to the next available four-week course.

Corin was overwhelmed by the results she was able to achieve. Within two weeks of treatment, Corin’s pain had practically vanished. Her back looked dramatically different and she felt like she was making full use of her lungs again.

By the end of the four week course, Corin’s confidence had returned and she had started getting used to life without the fear of surgery.

“I am so pleased with the results I have achieved,

? she said.

“I truly believed that I was going to need to have my spine fused. I couldn’t cope with the idea of the pain getting any worse and I thought the only way of dealing with the problem was to go under the knife.

“Happy, ecstatic, overwhelmed are all just words but I cannot explain how glad I am to have found the clinic. They have given me a second chance at life. I feel like I am back in control and I am getting used to being able to dance again without pain. It really is amazing the work that takes place in those treatment rooms.
