MEMBERS of Northside groups and organisations will be playing their part in keeping the coastline clean this week when they take part in an annual An Taisce initiative.

The locals will be participating in the fourth annual Coca-Cola Clean Coasts Week which runs from May 10 to 17. The event is part of An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme.

The week is a celebration of the coast and emphasises the important role that everyone can play, and are playing, in conserving the marine environment.

Events being held in Dublin during the week include:

?¢ Clontarf Remedial Clinic School clean up of Clontarf on May 13

?¢ Wild Geese of Low Rock Swimming Group clean up of Low Rock in Malahide

?¢ Bull Island Action Group clean up of Dollymount Strand on May 18, and

?¢ Howth Primary School clean up of Claremont Beach

Pat Oliver, director of the environmental education unit at An Taisce, said the event forms a key part of the Clean Coasts programme, which has been running for a decade.

“In that time, 1,111,682 pieces of litter have been removed from the Irish coastline thanks to 300 coastcare groups made up of 10, 456 volunteers taking part in a phenomenal 3,165 clean-up events in the last 10 years,

? said Ms Oliver.

“This year we are hoping to stage Ireland’s biggest ever clean up and we’re mobilising communities in every coastal region to come out and take part in this special celebratory event.
