TD defends call for more armed gardai

A SOUTHSIDE TD has defended his call for more armed gardai to patrol the streets.

Deputy Derek Keating (FG) called for an Armed Response Unit to be assigned to specific areas within the Clondalkin/Lucan area where there has been an escalation of crime.
Deputy Keating said he was concerned for the welfare of gardai in the area who have to deal with serious criminal elements on a daily basis.
“I do not want to see another Garda’s life lost in protecting the State against dissident republicans whose origins are questionable,
? he said.
However, his comments were criticised by Sinn Féin’s Dublin Mid-West representative, Eoin O’ Broin.
“Derek Keating called for more armed gardaà on our streets after a number of incidents of serious crime in Lucan and Clondalkin,
? he stated.
“Since Fine Gael and Labour took office, Garda numbers have been cut by 10 per cent. The force is fast approaching the critical number of 13,000 and has lost more than 1,000 officers.
“In addition to less gardaà on our streets, local stations are being closed and Garda vehicles are being reduced. All of this is having an impact on the ability of the gardaà to tackle crime in our communities.
?
However, in response, Deputy Keating defended his remarks.
“As the duly elected and local TD for Clondalkin/ Lucan, I personally represented Dublin Mid-West in ensuring that no Garda Station would be closed,
? he said.
“I also highlighted the need for a new fleet of Garda vehicles and I welcome the Minister for Justice’s announcement in the last number of weeks that e3 million is being provided for new equipment and vehicles for the gardai.
?
He added:
“As the local TD for Clondalkin and Lucan, I don’t need any member of Sinn Fein to remind me of the tremendous, dedicated and successful work that the gardai are involved in in my constituency.
