Musical society to stage Manilow’s smash hit
Dublin People 13 Apr 2013
MOST people would be familiar with the catchy Barry Manilow song

‘Copacabana’.
However, not everyone knows that the story behind it was developed into a Broadway stage musical for which Manilow wrote all the music.
A fantastic show bursting with top tunes, drama and lots of laughter was created.
Baldoyle Musical Society will present five performances of
‘Copacabana’, the toe-tapping musical comedy from Tuesday to Saturday, April 23-27 in St Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle village with curtain up nightly at 8pm.
The story follows the life of Lola the Showgirl as she falls for Tony, a bartender in the club, which gives its name to the show and hit single.
Rico, the shady owner of a nightclub in Havana, sets his sights on acquiring the services of Lola for his Tropicana club.
When she isn’t willing to go Rico decides to take her against her will.
Tony and an eclectic mix of Lola’s pals take off from New York to bring her back and the stage is set for a showdown.
As usual Baldoyle Musical Society will serve up a treat with a dazzling set and stunning costumes (especially those worn by the
‘Copa Girls’) and with a top class cast of talented locals supported by a 10-piece orchestra under the baton of Dave McGauran.
Baldoyle natives Paul Fay and Karen McCourt, both seasoned campaigners, direct and choreograph respectively.
Director Paul Fay told Northside People:
“This show has been a huge challenge for us.
“There is a balance to strike between the drama and the musical comedy to maximise the impact of the show – plus we have an enormous chorus on-stage.
?
Speaking about the large chorus, choreographer Karen McCourt said:
“It’s both exhilarating and exhausting but the end result will be spectacular.
“You just don’t see big choruses on stage any more and the atmosphere will be electric on the night.
?
Treasurer of Baldoyle Musical Society, Richie Smith, said the huge chorus helps to bring in more subscriptions, sell more tickets and is a real barometer of the society’s strength.
“Long may it continue,
? he stated.
