Property tax gets thumbs down from our Facebook followers
Dublin People 06 Apr 2013
IS THE property tax fair? That’s the debate raging at the moment as Revenue writes to householders around the country to give an indication of what their properties are worth and how much they are likely to have to pay. Here’s a selection of edited comments from our Facebook followers on the subject.

Bridget Grehan Kehoe: That’s a very silly question! The word tax is enough. It’s self explanatory, really.
Diarmaid Mac Alsandair: Feck no! I’m not paying to bail out a bunch of rich Eurotrash.
Ian Chambers: As someone who moved from the UK five years ago, I’m used to the idea of a property tax. The problem is how the idiots in charge have applied it.
Brian Butterly: Not fair as most have already paid the tax upfront by paying stamp duty. Those who bought in the boom paid a massive amount of stamp duty. Our European neighbours who pay property tax did not pay stamp duty. The property tax should only apply to the following: 1. First-time buyers as they are no longer subject to the massive stamp duty rates of years past; 2. Investment properties purchased from 2013.
Deirdre Kennedy: No, people shouldn’t pay it. The Government should cop themselves on and realise people don’t have their kind of money.
Marian Morrissey: No, it’s not fair. People can’t get blood out of a stone.
Derek James Byrne: Dublin Says No march through the city centre every Sunday. Why don’t you come out and cover it?
Siobhan Gibney: They couldn’t have thought up a more unfair tax if they tried! Why should someone who has slogged their guts out pay for a roof over their head?
