AN UGLY rubbish problem is blighting a scenic public park in Dublin 15 according to fed-up local residents.

Castlecurragh Park is the latest Dublin area to be used as a rubbish dump for people unwilling or unable to pay for the disposal of their domestic waste.

The litter problem is exacerbated by rubbish being washed up by a local river during times of flooding as well as gangs drinking and loitering in the park.

Local councillor David McGuinness (FF) said the situation is getting out of control.

“Castlecurragh Park is one of the most scenic walkways in Dublin 15,

? he stated.

“It is so disappointing that some people feel this stretch of waterway is ideal to dump waste and litter.

“This is something that is going to have to stop.

“Residents have asked that I have this issue addressed for them.

“They are proud of their park and do not want to see it become a dumping location.

“The entire community have a responsibility to inform Fingal County Council of any dumping.

Northside People showed images of the dumping to Fingal County Council, which has since worked to address the issue.

The litter and a burned out bin have been removed and pruning will be carried out on bushes.

The area near the side of playing pitches in Damastown is also due to be cleaned in the next few weeks.

“There is a major problem with litter in Castlecurragh Park and there are four sources of this litter, two of which are major contributors,

? the council spokesperson told Northside People.

“The first is fly-tipping of domestic rubbish and the second is material being washed down by the river when it is in flood.

“There is day-to-day littering also which is mainly sweet wrappings and soft drinks cans which appear to be discarded by school children.

“The fourth source of littering in the area is alcohol bottles and cans discarded onto the grass and into the bushes by people who drink at night and at weekends on the two seats on the eastern side of the parks.

“Fingal County Council urges people to dispose of their litter properly, in a bin for the purpose, and not to fly-tip at local amenities.
