Walkers transform Marlay Park

OVER 350 people braved wintery conditions to take part in a 4km walk around Marlay Park on January 19 as part of Operation Transformation.

Organised by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership, the event was part of a national initiative to promote walking as a fun way for people to get fit and stay active as part of a healthier lifestyle.

People of all ages and fitness levels put on their walking shoes and came along to walk and talk in the picturesque park.

Participants gathered at the College Road entrance and set out on a lap of the park leading to a fantastic spectacle of a trail of people nearly 1km long stretched out along the pathway.

The atmosphere was helped by a generous sprinkling of snow and motivated walking leaders setting the pace. With a hot cup of tea or coffee at the finish, the event had a real community and social feel to it.

Speaking after the event Shane McArdle, coordinator of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership, expressed his delight at the turnout.

“It was without doubt beyond our expectations considering the weather conditions,

? he said.

“Walking is easy and free and the success of this event shows that there is a huge demand in the community to get out and be active in a manner that fits your lifestyle.
