Councillor wants bridge called after the Abbey Theatre
Dublin People 10 Nov 2012
A SOUTHSIDE councillor is calling for support from Dubliners for his proposal to name the newest bridge on the River Liffey after Ireland’s national theatre, The Abbey.
The bridge runs between Marlborough Street and Hawkins Street and there have been many suggestions since the beginning of this year as to what it might be called.
A campaign is already up and running to have it called after revolutionary hero James Connolly and the late Northside TD, Tony Gregory.
However, Fine Gael councillor Paddy McCartan wants it called after the Abbey Theatre.
“Given that the Abbey Theatre, when completed, will extend to Eden Quay alongside this new bridge, I think it only fitting that the bridge takes on its name,
? he said.
“It is one that embodies all that is rich in Irish literary culture.
“There have been many suggestions for the name of this new bridge, some serious and some not so serious. The Troika Bridge falls into the latter category. But I think this is something Dubliners can take real ownership of, and is a project that offers an opportunity for us to think about what the Abbey Theatre has meant to the people of Dublin and how it has enriched all our lives.
?
He added:
“I am calling on the people of Dublin to support me in lobbying for the new bridge to be named the Abbey Bridge. This is our city and all facets of our city should acknowledge Ireland’s cultural contribution on the world’s stage as exemplified by the history of the Abbey Theatre over the past 100 years.
