THE Irish Homeless World Cup team paid a visit to Leinster House last week to be congratulated for a fine performance at the tournament in Mexico earlier in the month.
The Irish squad finished 16th out of 48 countries and recorded victories over World Cup holders Scotland and South American giants Argentina along the way.
Ireland also finished ahead of top European teams from England, Germany, Holland, France and Italy and goalkeeper David Byrne was awarded a trophy for being the tournament’s top goalie.
“I feel a tremendous amount of pride to have been associated with this team,
? said team coach Mick Pender.
Team manager Sean Kavanagh, who also founded the Big Issue Street Leagues, was equally proud of his charges.
“What a great bunch of lads,
? he praised.
“It was the most competitive tournament I have seen in my ten years managing the Irish team. They gave their all and more and I feel humbled to be in their company.
?
The Homeless World Cup games in Mexico City attracted big crowds and there was also a huge global audience tuning in on YouTube where matches were streamed live.
Ireland has participated in the Homeless World Cup ten times and has won three trophies. However, manager Kavanagh is disappointed about the lack of awareness of the tournament in Ireland.
“The first weekend alone there were over 50,000 spectators – more than just about any match in the English Premier League,
? he said.
“It is not just a fiesta of football but a once-in-a-lifetime experience that transforms the lives of many players – the poorest of the poor around the world.

The Irish squad was invited to Leinster House by Sinn Fein where they were honoured at a special reception at which a presentation was made to goalkeeper David Byrne.
