Survey finds driving is key to independence

A NEW survey has found that one in five (20 per cent) of Dubliners believe that learning to drive is the single most important factor in claiming one’s independence.

The study revealed that across the country, leaving home was considered the most significant element in becoming independent, with 52 per cent of all respondents selecting it as the most important factor.

However, the 2011 census has revealed that 440,000 adults aged over 18 still live with their parents. Shockingly only 138,000 of these are students, while 91,000 of these adults are aged over 30, with the vast majority being men (63,271).

In the capital, the percentage of people crediting leaving home as the most important factor is significantly higher than anywhere else at 61 per cent, compared to 39 per cent in Munster and 41 per cent in Connacht and Ulster.
