Dublin People 06 Oct 2012
THIS summer, the three RNLI lifeboat stations in Dublin launched a total of 37 times – Dun Laoghaire (18), Howth (12) and Skerries (7).
Earlier in the summer Dun Laoghaire RNLI were involved in an operation that saw them recover two yachts in difficulty in gale force winds and driving rain.
The incidents occurred as the boats were returning from an offshore race on the Irish Sea.
Howth and Dun Laoghaire were also involved in a rescue operation in Dublin Bay recently when a number of rowing skiffs competing in a race got into difficulty as weather conditions changed. Howth RNLI were on scene commander in a search operation that also involved the Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Dublin Port’s pilot boats and local boats who all worked to bring the competitors to safety.
In August, Skerries RNLI launched to reports of a yacht drifting on to rocks in the vicinity of Skerries islands.
The lifeboat quickly located a 26-foot yacht with two people onboard. The yacht was taken under tow by the lifeboat and brought safely to Skerries harbour.
Overall, in Ireland there were 377 launches, a slight drop on last year’s total of 389.
Owen Medland, RNLI Training Divisional Inspector, said it was another busy summer for the RNLI despite the unpredictable weather.
“There have been some stories of incredible bravery and also some stories of devastating loss,
? he said.
“In all cases our lifeboat volunteers have shown extreme professionalism and commitment.
