Blackrock flood works welcomed

THE Office of Public Works (OPW) has agreed to fund a flood relief scheme to protect against flooding from the Stradbrook Stream in Blackrock, it has emerged.

A spokesperson for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said the OPW has approved the request it made for funding for the scheme.

It is expected that work will begin shortly on the

“project management

? phase of the scheme.

“Personnel will become available to commence work in October but it is not possible at this stage to put a timescale for commencement of the on-site works,

? the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the Office of Public Works had granted the council funding of

?¬150,000 for the project.

“However, until the design nears completion the projected cost of the eventual scheme will not be known,

? the spokesperson added.

“The main works will involve optimisation of stream channel capacity and incorporation of resilience into stream culverts.

Cllr Victor Boyhan (Ind) said the scheme was

“great news

? for the residents of Stradbrook and Monkstown.

“The two major floods over the last 12 months had left local people devastated and financially broke in some cases,

? he said.

“And some houses along the stream route could no longer secure adequate house insurance.
