Minister praises Ballymun regeneration

THE regeneration of Ballymun has created

“a legacy that will benefit communities across the country

?, according to the Minister for Housing and Planning.

Minister Jan O’Sullivan (Lab) was speaking after a recent meeting with the board of Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL).

The regeneration project, the biggest of its kind in Europe, is expected to have cost e700 million by the time it is complete in 2014.

The last phase of funding approved by the Government was significantly less than was requested by BRL. Nevertheless, a budget of e51 million was granted for this phase, which will be spent on critical infrastructure projects.

According to Minister O’Sullivan the transformation of Ballymun is a

“testament to the vision, dedication and perseverance of the local community

?.

“Working in close partnership with Ballymun Regeneration and Dublin City Council in particular they have brought about remarkable change,

? she said.

“The physical regeneration of Ballymun is striking. New housing and state-of-the-art community facilities are fostering a community spirit that will continue to grow.

“Of course the social and economic regeneration of Ballymun will continue even as the physical renewal phase comes to a close.

Minister O’Sullivan pointed out that the regeneration is about more than just bricks and mortar and that the legacy of Ballymun goes beyond the physical and social transformation of the community.

“The experience that exists within Ballymun will resonate in communities across the country where Ballymun will be seen as a leader in managing change and progress,

? she concluded.
