Lengthy road works to get underway

A SOUTHSIDE councillor has warned that an almost three-month-long road resurfacing project will be a major inconvenience for local residents and businesses.
Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has signalled its intention to resurface Glenageary Road Lower and as a result the local authority is temporarily closing the road from Monday, September 24 until Friday, December 14.
The council said that a traffic management plan will be in operation and local access will be maintained at all times.
Cllr Cormac Devlin (FF) welcomed the roadworks adding that he believed that they were necessary but warning that businesses could suffer during construction.
“This road is a hazard to cyclists and motorists alike with the number of pot holes along it,
? he said.
Cllr Devlin also voiced concern for the already hard pressed businesses of Dún Laoghaire town, Glasthule and Sandycove villages who may be severely affected by this protracted project.
He also noted that the Glenageary Road Lower is the main artery into these shopping areas.
“Local residents as well as commuters are all going to be affected for three months while these works are ongoing,
? he said.
“Surely works on a road of this size should have been arranged over the summer months when schools were off and people were away. It could have also been linked-in with the Water Rehabilitation Programme that recently finished in the area.

A spokesperson for the council said it has secured funding to restore Glenageary Road Lower which has deteriorated following significant improvements to water infrastructure in the last two years and the adverse weather conditions experienced in 2010 and 2011.
