Local activist joins Daly in Socialist Party walkout

TWO Socialist Party activists have joined Clare Daly in resigning from the party.

Brian Greene, from Baldoyle, who was a member of the party for 16 years, quit along with his brother Donal and Deputy Daly, who were members of the party for 22 and 25 years respectively.

According to Mr Greene, they had each planned and chosen their timing for the first weekend of September prior to the return of the Dail.

After Clare Daly’s announcement that she was to be redesignated as a United Left Alliance TD, the Socialist Party linked her resignation with her political relationship with Deputy Mick Wallace (Ind).

However, Mr Greene, who has been heavily involved in campaigns such as the household charge and water tax in recent years, insisted that their resignation from the Socialist Party was aimed at building the ULA.

“My resignation was for operational differences with the party in relation to how and what was done,

? he told Northside People.

“Donal, Clare and I had spoken about it prior to our resignation and our reasons are very similar.

“I don’t imagine there is general unrest within the Socialist Party as the rest of the members seem quite happy and loyal. I wouldn’t say this is the start of any huge walkout.

Mr Greene said he was disappointed but unsurprised by the controversy caused by Deputy Daly’s resignation.

“I think she made her position very clear but there seemed to be a fixation on the part of the Socialist Party on Mick Wallace given how many times they mentioned him in their statements after Clare’s resignation.

“Donal and I never met Mick Wallace and we also resigned so it’s obvious that the issues are with the Socialist Party and how it’s being run.
