How could they?

SICKENING: The dog that was doused in acid in the Donaghmede area last week.

THIS is the sad and sickening face of animal cruelty on the Northside of Dublin.

This helpless dog was doused in acid and left to die on a road in Donaghmede last week.

The despicable and disgusting act of animal cruelty ended in the slow and painful death of the helpless German Shepherd.

The tortured animal is believed to have been thrown out of a car at 6.30am on Streamville Road on Tuesday, September 4.

Two distraught passers-by stopped to help the animal, which could not be moved from the middle of the road.

“It was absolutely heartbreaking to see this animal in so much pain,

? Mark Fitzpatrick told Northside People.

“It was sickening to think anyone could do this to an animal and just leave it to die.

“His jaws seemed to be fused together and he had open wounds on his side.

“There was nothing we could do to help him. It was just horrific.

Mr Fitzpatrick said he made several calls to the gardai and 24-hour vets seeking assistance.

However, he claimed it took two hours for a dog warden to arrive on the scene.

Mr Fitzpatrick, who was late for work that morning in his job as an undertaker with Stafford’s Funeral Homes in North Strand, explained how distressing the situation was for all involved.

“I stood with the dog, who was in so much pain, for two hours,

? he stated.

“I work as an undertaker so I’ve seen some very upsetting things before but I think this was worse because the dog was still clinging to life.

“People who walked by could only turn away because the scene was so upsetting and graphic.

“What’s worse is that as time went by the kids in the area started to walk by on their way to school. One child just looked at the dog and ran away scared and crying.

Mr Fitzpatrick said it was a relief when the dog warden arrived on the scene to euthanise the distressed animal.

“I called the warden a few hours later and he told me that the dog literally bled out and died as he tried transporting him,

? he stated.

Mr Fitzpatrick, with the financial assistance and support of his employer, is now printing up posters and fliers to highlight the horrific case of animal cruelty.

Another passer-by, Alan Murray, who was the second person to come across the desperate animal, condemned those responsible for this sickening case of animal cruelty.

“It was absolutely shocking,

? Mr Murray told Northside People.

“I can’t understand the mentality behind it. You wouldn’t do that to your worst enemy.

Jimmy Cahill of the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) was stunned to hear of the incident.

“This is the first time I’ve heard of an acid attack on a dog,

? said Mr Cahill.

“We get a lot of cases of animal cruelty but I’ve never come across anything like this before.

“Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing and what would cause such extreme suffering and pain.
