DUNDRUM South Dublin AC women’s team successfully defended their title at the recent Woodie’s DIY National Track and Field Final in Tullamore Harriers Stadium.

The Southside club was led by Irish record holder Deirdre Ryan who convincingly won the high jump with a clearance of 1.70m.

They faced a fierce battle with Cork club Leevale AC who welcomed the addition of Irish International athlete Derval O’Rourke. O’Rourke won the 100m hurdles event and also anchored the Leevale 4x100m team to second place.

Pride of place for the Dundrum squad went to team captain Clare Bergin who dominated the 400m to win in a time of 55.48, with her fellow Olympic relay team member Jessie Barr (Ferrybank AC) second in 57.06.

Bergin then returned later in the programme to finish third in the 100m and capped the day off by anchoring her team to victory in the 4x400m.

Anita Fitzgibbon topped the javelin event with a massive throw of 52.21m while team mate Grainne Moggan placed third in the triple jump. In the distance events Sinead Denny and Fiona Clinton placed second and third respectively in the 800m and 3000m events to gain good points for Dundrum.

After a long and grueling day of competition Dundrum accumulated a total of 112, which put them four points ahead of Leevale who scored 108. The victory earns the Southside club the right to compete against the best clubs in Europe at next May’s European Clubs Track and Field Championships.
