Local teacher launches new children’s book

A NORTHSIDE teacher has penned a page-turning adventure story aimed at young readers.

The book, entitled

‘My Apollo Summer’, written by author Pierce Feiritear from Phibsboro, tells the epic adventure of a 14-year-old Irish-American boy’s summer holiday experience in Ireland.

It takes readers into the fictional world of protagonist Danny Sullivan from Florida.

It combines the story of a man’s expedition to the moon into the vivid experiences of a young impressionable boy as he discovers surfing, rural life and coming-of-age experiences.

The teenager’s summer is catapulted into dismay after his mother announces that the family is heading to County Kerry for a summer vacation.

However, young Danny had planned to spend the summer on a surfboard and working on his high school project in Florida.

He also hoped to experience the Apollo 11 space rocket that was about to blast off to the moon from nearby Cape Kennedy.

Instead, Danny is whisked off to an old farmhouse in Kerry that has no TV or phone.

Danny is also forced to deal with bittersweet memories of his late father who was born and raised in Kerry.

The book is Mr Feiritear’s third novel for children.

His other novels include

‘Return to Troy’ and

‘Brush – A Tale of Two Foxes’.

Mr Feiritear is a teacher at Scoil Mhuire, Marino.

His dad was born and raised in Kerry, much like the main character in the book.
