Inner city kids work it out

PUPILS from two north inner city schools showed how good they were with numbers when they took part in an initiative before they broke up for the summer holidays.

Citi, in conjunction with Junior Achievement, hosted a maths through sport event with 120 students from St Laurence O’Toole Boys and Girls’ Schools, Seville Place Dublin 1, to celebrate their 200th anniversary.
‘Working it Out’ combines sports activities and maths to show students the fun and relevance of maths in their everyday lives.
By taking maths away from textbooks and copybooks and into team activities, the students were given the opportunity to both learn and show their abilities in a relaxed atmosphere.
The event featured basketball, football penalty shoot outs, skipping, bingo and darts. Each activity incorporated a specific maths challenge, complementary to and reinforcing the National School Curriculum.
Twenty employees from Citi volunteered over two days to participate in the event and assist the students as they took part in each of the sporting activities and worked out their calculations.
Overall the event was a great success and learning experience for the students.
Ms Ryan, a teacher at St Laurence O’Toole Girls’ School, said:
“The children had a great time learning maths in a fun and interactive way through the different sporting activities. They loved it.
