A can do attitude helps Dublin cats

A CAMPAIGN announced in May to encourage dog and cat owners to recycle their steel pet food cans has raised over

?¬12,000 for the Dublin SPCA.
As part of
‘Together We Can’, Purina announced that it would donate
?¬44,800 in total to animal charities when the number of steel pet food cans pledged reached 75,000.
This target has been reached, which means that over
?¬12,000 will be donated to Dublin SPCA to help fund their feral cat welfare programme.
According to Brian Gillen, Chief Executive of the Dublin SPCA, the organisation’s feral cat welfare programme is vitally important as it allows the animals to live their lives without adding to the homeless cat population of Ireland.
“Spaying and neutering also cuts down on the spread of disease and other related infections associated with mating,
? he said.
“However, it can be a costly programme and the charity, like all charities, desperately needs funds to continue this important work.
“Last year alone the Dublin SPCA rescued in excess of 1,500 cats during the kitten season, which historically begins in April, peaks in July and ends in October.
“This is a time when shelters like the Dublin SPCA are bursting at the seams, crammed with the offspring of the feral cat population. That is why this
?¬12,000 from Purina’s Together We Can campaign is very much appreciated and will be put to excellent use in helping save the lives of our feral feline friends.

Enda Gorman of Purina Ireland added:
“Through Together We Can, we hope to shine a spotlight on the benefits of recycling steel pet food cans to show pet owners that every recycled can does make a difference.
“In fact, there’s no limit to how many times steel can be recycled, which means every can that a pet owner recycles today has the potential to be recycled again and again.”
Pet owners can continue to pledge to recycle their steel pet food cans at www.purina.ie/recycle until the end of the year. They also have the chance to win
?¬2,200 off their energy bills by entering a unique code found inside multipacks of Winalot and Felix cans.
