Minister to present ‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’ awards
Dublin People 17 Mar 2012
MINISTER of State with the Department of Health Roisin
Shortall will be presenting this year’s

‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’ National Media
Awards organisers confirmed last week.
The minister, who has made alcohol abuse one of her
main priorities, will be handing out the accolades at the award ceremony which
is being held on May 16.
Entries are still pouring in for this year’s
competition which is centred around two themes – finding a solution for
underage drinking and educating young people about drugs.
According to the organisers at the Greater
Blanchardstown Response to Drugs (GBRD), the competition is designed to
encourage students and adults to educate themselves and others at school, the
home and their local communities, about drugs and alcohol.
The educational initiative appeals to a broad range of
creative and talented students and adults, as entrants have a choice of
submitting a video or animated feature, a cartoon strip, a newspaper article or
an audio feature with the prospect of seeing their efforts published or
broadcast.
Phillip Keegan, Co-Ordinator with GBRD, said there
were already some interesting entries for the 2012 awards.
“The early submissions have shown some
thought-provoking and positive ideas from entrants as young as 12 on how to
address the increasingly problematic issue of underage drinking,
? he said.
“Conflicting views are also arising as students and
adults are taking about the need for drug education in schools. Are parents
doing enough? Are teachers doing enough? Are schools doing enough? If students
do not learn about drugs in school then where do they acquire their knowledge
and information about drugs?

The Let’s Talk About Drugs National Media Awards 2012
is supported by the County Dublin VEC and the Health Service
Executive/Drugs.ie. The competition is open to anyone in Ireland aged 12 and
over.
Entrants still have some time to create and submit
their original features as the deadline approaches at the end of this month on
March 30.
The winning submissions will be awarded a range of prizes
including digital cameras, notebook computers and glass trophies at the awards
ceremony on May 16.
Phoenix FM and the Dublin People Group are media
partners for the competition while Caroline Twohig from the fyi television
programme on 3e will feature at the awards.
