NORTHSIDER Matthew Daly has revealed he may have to work in
Canada in order to pay the

?¬1,600 per month mortgage on his home.

Mr Daly (27), from Santry, was among the 5,000
plus people who visited the Working Abroad expo held in the RDS earlier this
month.

Eight years’ experience and four years of training
will go down the drain for the qualified plumber who hasn’t been able to secure
stable employment in five years.

Speaking to Northside People, Mr Daly said he can just
about cover his mortgage repayments but has to turn to his family for food.

“I don’t want to leave my girlfriend and family and
the home I bought to work in a mine in Canada for weeks on end but it’s looking
likely,

? he stated.

“I can’t see a light at the end of the tunnel here. I
don’t know where or if I’m going to find work from week to week and month to
month.

“So many times in the past five years I’ve got a job
thinking it’ll be a big and long enough job, only to be told a week or two
later that the company doesn’t have the money to finish the work or that it has
to let people go.

“It’s a disgrace that qualified people like me who
paid taxes and worked hard are the ones who are paying the price for the mistakes
of others.

Mr Daly, who bought an apartment, is crippled with a
huge mortgage repayment which he is desperately trying to keep on top of.

At the Working Abroad expo he was offered a

?¬2,000 a
week job working in a mine in Canada, which he is currently considering despite
securing employment here for a few weeks.

“I got some temporary work wrapping pallets and I know
how lucky I was to get that but it’s only for a few weeks and then I’m back to
square one,

? Mr Daly explained.

“It’s not sustainable so I think I will have to move
abroad for job security.

“As part of the job offer I was told that my
accommodation, flights and even money for food would be covered but I know that
I’m likely to be stuck working in a mine for weeks on end.

Mr Daly said plumbing is what he loves to do.

“It’s what I’m qualified in but I just can’t get the
work here so I will have to move to Canada to earn money to pay for my mortgage
here,

? he added.

The Working Abroad expo featured 85 stands and 100
exhibitors, many of them employers from Australia and Canada.

Thousands of people facing into bleak futures queued
from early in the morning to gain entry to the event.
