THE Coolock Campaign Against the Household and Water
Taxes group held a

“hugely successful

? information day at Northside Shopping
Centre last Saturday week (February 25).

It was held as part of a National Day of Action against
the household charge.

Local members of the campaign distributed hundreds of
newsletters and discussed what they believe is a deeply unpopular and unfair
tax with shoppers.

The day of action was called by the National Campaign
Against Household and Water Taxes and saw dozens of campaigns take place in
cities, towns and villages throughout the country.

Local campaign member Ciarán Heaphey told Northside
People that the response to the campaign in Coolock was

“hugely positive and
reflects the mood at public meetings and door-to-door canvassing in recent
weeks

?.

“The vast majority of people we met expressed anger at
being forced by the Government to once again pick up the tab for the gambling
debts of bankers and property developers,

? stated Mr Heaphey.

“With just six per cent of households registered for
the tax to date, it is clear there is a determined mood of opposition to the
Government’s austerity programme and a growing momentum behind the call not to
register and not to pay.

Another local campaign member, Anne McCormack from
Kilmore, believes the campaign will continue to build support in the area over
the coming weeks.

“We have held a number of public meetings and are
planning a further meeting on Friday, March 9 in Kilmore West Community Centre,
which will be addressed by Joe Higgins TD,

? said Ms McCormack.

“The campaign in
Coolock is encouraging local people to get involved, to come to the meetings,
put a campaign poster in their window, or distribute leaflets to their
neighbours and friends.

“If we stand together we can face down the Government
threats and make this unjust tax unworkable.
