TWO deserving Northside pensioners were recognised and
celebrated for their selflessness and dedication to their local community at a
special ceremony held recently in the Mansion House.

Lorcan Drive residents, Paul Cahill and Michael (Mick)
Mahon, were surrounded by their friends and neighbours who thought it time the
pair were publicly acknowledged for their work in the Santry community.

For years Paul has been sweeping the walkway in his
neighbourhood and even cleaning graffiti off the walls, which did not go
unnoticed or unappreciated by his neighbours.

Meanwhile Michael, a skilled craftsman and model
maker, has time and time again created breathtakingly detailed, intricate and
accurate models of areas and buildings which he then donates to charities to
raffle off.

Paul and Michael’s neighbour Patrick Fagan explained
why he thought it was about time the pair were recognised and thanked for their
selflessness.

“I’m very lucky to be living in Lorcan Drive because
of the lovely neighbours I have,

? he told Northside People.

“Both Paul and Michael are extraordinary people who
think nothing of what they do for others.

“We’re all quick enough to brow-beat anyone who’s not
doing good so I thought it was about time that we let these men know just how
grateful we are for all they do.

“Paul has been keeping our street clean for years and
even cleans the graffiti and has never made any fuss about it.

“Meanwhile, Mick has made many wonderful models of
boats and buildings which he has put a lot of time and money into and he just
gives them away to charities so that they can make money from raffling them
off.

Patrick took it upon himself to contact Lord Mayor
Andrew Montague to request that he recognise the dedicated duo and a ceremony
was organised in the Mansion House for Friday, January 20.

Proving just how appreciated Paul and Michael are in
their community, 30 residents, both young and old, attended the ceremony in
which the pair were praised and presented with plaques and certificates.

“I think they were surprised at the number of people
who turned up to show their appreciation,

? Patrick explained.

“These are men who wouldn’t like to be tapped on the
back but I think they did enjoy their day.

“I was determined that their selflessness and
dedication was not going to go unnoticed.

Patrick added:

“Unfortunately, we’re now living in
times when many people don’t know their neighbours by name and the thought of
cleaning the street in their neighbourhood would be unthinkable but yet these
are the things that make a community.”
