A PUBLIC health nurse in Dublin 15 will be featured in
the latest episode of

‘The Nurse’ on RTE One this Thursday (February 2).

During the programme John Carew, who has worked in
Castleknock for the past three years, describes his job and is shown helping
local MS sufferer, Jude.

John has previously worked in the tough A&E units
at a number of north London hospitals but says he’s much happier working with
the local community in Dublin 15.

“You were 90 per cent of the time a bouncer – having
to pin guys down and everything,

? he explains.

“What I like about what I do now is that we are the
face of the service in the community, we are the voice for the voiceless.

Viewers can see John working with Jude who is trying
to retain his independence despite his MS health difficulties. The programme
follows John as he battles to get Jude more funding for his increasing care
needs.

The Nurse is a six-part documentary series that
follows the daily lives of nurses like John and their patients. Community and
public health nurses in Ireland make almost 10,000 house calls every day and
the series visits locations all around the country to highlight their work.

Much of every working day in the life of a public
health nurse is spent in the car, driving from one call to the next. And when
their visits are done they still have to battle through all their paperwork.

John’s work can be seen this Thursday (February 2) on
RTE One at 10.15pm.
