THIS Christmas season students and teachers from the
Dun Laoghaire School of Music have been very busy with a hectic schedule of
charity events.

It all started in mid November, when the school’s
choir was approached by homeless charity Focus Ireland and Clery’s of O’Connell
Street, and asked to sing at the grand arrival of Santa Claus.

The choir, consisting of both teachers and students
from the music school, entertained children and onlookers by singing a mixture
of popular and traditional Christmas carols.

Then they sang and entertained senior citizens at the
County Hall, Marine Road in Dun Laoghaire, for Senior Citizens Day. The event
was organised by the Dun Laoghaire Business Association and Dun Laoghaire
Rathdown County Council.

And on Saturday, December 5 the choir was back in
action when they were joined by other students and teachers at the school as
they hosted a charity recital in aid of Focus Ireland in the gallery of the
Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire.

This was a most enjoyable event with a variety of
musical styles and performances on display. The school raised just under e500
in aid of Focus Ireland from this event alone.

After the charity recital, the choir went on to the
Dun Laoghaire Shopping Centre, where its members sang carols to raise money for
the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA).

They also entertained shoppers and children for most
of the afternoon, creating a festive spirit throughout the shopping centre with
fun and laughter.

The school raised over

?¬200 for the DSPCA on the day.

On Saturday, December 10, students and teachers at the
school also sang and played music in front of thousands of people for the
turning on of the Christmas lights at Dun Laoghaire. This time, the music
school performed in aid of the children’s charity Barnardos.

Catherine Madden, who is joint director of the Dun
Laoghaire School of Music along with John McCrea, said:

“We are delighted to be
helping and using our talents for the benefit of others who are truly in need
of help and support especially in these difficult times.

Mr McCrea added:

“We would like to sincerely thank all
the teachers, students and parents who have taken time from their hectic
schedules and who helped and supported us in raising funds for these very good
and worthwhile causes.
