Councillors in new Moore Street call
Dublin People 12 Nov 2011
DUBLIN City
Council is to write to members of the Cabinet informing them of councillors’
calls for the protection of properties linked to the 1916 Easter Rising.
At a city
council meeting on November 7, councillors passed a motion calling on the
Government to give national monument status to numbers 10 to 25 Moore Street.
The motion
urged the Government to take into account the potentially adverse consequences
a planned commercial development would have on a number of terraced houses on
Moore Street.
Relatives of
the leaders of the 1916 Rising believe the large commercial development scheme,
planned by developer Joe O’Reilly, could potentially undermine the structure of
the entire terrace on Moore Street where the buildings are located.
They want the
site of the national monument to be extended to the whole 100-yard Moore Street
terrace, including numbers 10 to 25.
Mr O’Reilly has
already been granted planning permission to redevelop the 2.7-hectare Carlton
cinema site, which includes parts of Moore Street.
However, Mr
O’Reilly first needs permission from the Cabinet to build a commemorative
centre at the national monument site before the overall scheme can proceed.
In 2007,
numbers 14-17 Moore Street was designated a national monument due to its links
with the rising. Number 16 was the headquarters of the insurgents.
However,
relatives of rising leaders and campaigners have strongly urged Minister for
Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs Jimmy Deenihan and other Government
ministers to reject the application.
North inner
city ward councillor Nial Ring’s (Ind) grandfather and four granduncles were
all part of the GPO Garrison in 1916 and were later evacuated to Moore Street
from where they surrendered.
Cllr Ring said
he was delighted the council had passed the motion.
“Dublin
City Council’s position is quite clear on this issue,
? he stated.
“We want and
have voted to have National Monument status extended to the entire Moore Street
Terrace, numbers 10 to 25.
“We also want
the Cabinet to be fully aware of our position and now this will be the case.
