Southside gym in fitness battle against cancer
Dublin People 05 Nov 2011
A
MAN who lost his brother-in-law to cancer earlier this year is encouraging
Southsiders to take part in a new challenge to help fight the disease.
Jamie
Myerscough, the CEO of educogym, suffered his personal loss during the summer.
He
is involved in a unique health initiative on behalf of the Irish Cancer Society
(ICS).
“Sadly
this summer, I lost my brother-in-law to cancer,
? he reflected.
“Losing your
best friend from school and having to watch your sister and her husband fight
this lonely battle was incredibly tough and yet their single minded approach to
fighting this disease together was so inspiring.
?
As
a result Jamie is backing the
‘Lose a Pound to Gain a Pound’ challenge in aid
of the ICS.
According
to the national cancer registry in Ireland (NCRI), one in three people will
develop the disease by the age of 75.
Statistics
show that becoming overweight dramatically increases the risk of cancer.
However, you can reduce your risk of cancer by 33 per cent simply by following
a healthy diet, being physically fit and keeping a healthy weight.
Studies
show that the most dangerous area on the body to store excess weight is around
the waist.
In
addition, it turns out that cancer isn’t the only disease linked to a
larger-than-life waistline. Cardiovascular disease, Ireland’s largest killer,
and diabetes are also linked to being overweight or even obese. With two out of
every three people in Ireland now overweight, the problem has increased.
The
leading health and fitness group, educogym, has launched their charity
challenge, which saw members lose an impressive 58 stone last time. It is now
hoped it will become an annual event.
Speaking
at the launch, Kevin Delaney, community fundraiser with the Irish Cancer
Society added:
“We rely almost totally on volunteer fundraisers to raise money
to provide services to cancer patients and their families. We would like to
thank everybody in advance for taking on the educogym challenge and all those
that support them.
?
Running
until December 11, with a closing date of November 14, it will include ongoing
consultations over the weeks plus 24 supervised training sessions with a
personal trainer.
The
event will culminate with a prize giving night and charity auction on December
14 in Ely Wine Bar, Dublin Docklands and all proceeds will go to the Irish
Cancer Society.
Gyms
taking part include educogym in Dundrum Town Centre, Blackrock, Dublin
Docklands and Naas.
Participating
members will be encouraged to have friends, family and work colleagues sponsor
each pound of fat lost or even each pound of muscle gained. To help raise more money and awareness for
cancer, educogym will also be donating 10 per cent from all course fees to the
Irish Cancer Society.
