WRITER
and film director Peter Sheridan officially unveiled a plaque commemorating the
75th anniversary of the establishment of Marino College in Fairview recently.

Jim
Martin, principal, said the event took into account the societal influence of
the college as a place of innovation.

“With
an overall population of almost 3,000 students Marino College is unique in
Irish education as a provider of courses for a wide variety of learners,

? he
said.

“Since
the beginning in 1936 Marino College has been at the forefront of educational
development and innovation. We are delighted to be celebrating 75 years and I
would like to thank everyone who has worked in the college over all those years
for their dedication, skill and passion for their work as educators.

The
CEO of the CDVEC, Jacinta Stewart, who was present at the commemorative event
said:

“Marino College is steeped in a tradition of inclusive education. Since
1936 this college has been achieving high academic standards while caring for
the students’ wellbeing and development.

“Marino
College is not only a pioneer in post-primary education but has also become a
leader in adult and further education by developing a wide range of top quality
further education courses for adults and school leavers.

“We
in City of Dublin VEC are very proud of this college. It is my pleasure, on
this important occasion, to congratulate the educators present and past, to
express our pride in the achievements of all of our students and to thank the
community that we are proud to have been a part of for 75 years.

The
college offers a number of comprehensive courses that also seek to provide students
with valuable work placements. It also facilitates a range of higher education
courses through FETAC.

The
college recently launched a pilot to facilitate progression routes to certain
higher certificate courses.

Under
the initiative, most course places are open to FETAC applicants along with
Leaving Certificate applicants. The scoring system under these new arrangements
enables a certificate holder to achieve up to a maximum of 400 points.

The
college also offers a number of courses in nursing, healthcare, dental support
and journalism.

For
the past two years, the college has experimented with a successful drawing
programme for adults.

The
project, funded by Grundtvig, the EU life long learning programme, is a
culmination of various European partnerships.

It
aims to help adults in their powers of developing cultural expression, social
competence and inter-personal skills.

It
is based on the rationale that social activity helps to promote and develop
confidence and ambition.

The
notion behind the project is that through visits to other countries and drawing
activities in their home organisations, those involved will learn how to become
facilitators of culturally-themed drawing workshops.

Countries
involved in the project include Greece, the UK, Hungary and Portugal.
