School children launch local history DVD

A YEAR
of hard work by children at a Northside school has come to fruition with the
launch of a DVD detailing the history of their area.

Last
Friday, the sixth class children of St Joseph’s Co-ed, East Wall, launched

‘East Wall – A Journey Through Time’, in the Sean O’Casey Centre.

The
local history DVD which is the result of a year long, intergenerational project
between the children and older members of the community, is guaranteed to spark
huge interest in the area.

The
project was part of a hugely successful partnership between Nascadh CDP and St
Joseph’s Co-ed, which aims to bring together young and old voices of the
community.

‘East
Wall – A Journey Through Time’ explores the history of the area from the
building of East Wall in 1700s to modern day and is not only a potted history
of the area but also a celebration of a vibrant community.

The DVD
was produced by sixth class teacher, Caitriona Ni Cassaithe and directed by
Roisin Geraghty.

“As a
history enthusiast myself, this is a project I have dreamed about for quite a
while,

? said Ms Ni Cassaithe, a teacher at the school for nine years and a
native of East Wall.

“The
children have learned so much, not only about our local area, which is
fascinating, it also allowed them hands on experience in filming, editing and
narrating scripts.

“It
really has been a wonderful experience, and these are a talented bunch of
children.

Danny
DeVaal, a student from sixth class 2010, said:

“My dream is to be a journalist
but I also love making small movies.

“This
project was absolutely brilliant. We learned loads and it was great to talk
with the older people of East Wall. We’re all like old friends now.

The DVD,
funded by a grant from the IFSC Trust Fund, took almost a year of hard work to
produce and has been a wonderful experience for both children and adults
involved.

Local
councillor Nial Ring (Ind), who was instrumental in securing funding for the
project, launched the DVD.
