Expert teacher reaction to Leaving Cert Home Economics Papers
Padraig Conlon 07 Jun 2023Verdict on LC Home Ec (Higher)
Commenting on today’s Leaving Certificate Higher Level Home Economics paper, Studyclix subject expert Linda Dolan, Home Ec teacher at Mercy College, Sligo, said:
“Today’s Higher Level Home Economics paper was undoubtedly a challenging exam, presenting some tricky questions that required very specific information. In the short questions, there was a huge emphasis on food processing and the food industry.
“Another hot topic in both sections was the area of financial planning and management, possibly reflecting our current economic situation.
“The highly anticipated Question One in Section B was based on “Sources of Iron in Irish teenagers ages 13-18”, not Carbohydrates or Vitamin B as may have been predicted.
“The pie chart provided was easy to comprehend and analyse, however the questions were quite specific and incorporated a section on Vitamin C.
“Overall, the lack of focus on nutrition and food commodities was disappointing and students would definitely have been put through their paces with this paper.”
Verdict on LC Home Ec (Ordinary)
Commenting on today’s Leaving Certificate Ordinary Level Home Economics paper, Studyclix subject expert Linda Dolan, Home Ec teacher at Mercy College, Sligo, said:
“The 2023 Ordinary Level Home Economics paper was very straightforward and student-friendly.
“Protein made a welcomed appearance in Section B, Question 1 as was expected.
“Protein bars are very much “on trend” among teenagers recently due to the ever increasing popularity of gyming as a hobby.
“The information came in the format of food labels which students had to compare and contrast.
“This is an excellent life skill that is encouraged within Home Economics which extends far beyond any exam paper!
“The short questions covered a broad range of topics and were very manageable.
“Section B, Question 4 presented the very current issue of buying/renting property, portraying the ongoing housing crisis in Ireland.
“Overall, this paper would have been welcomed with open arms as there was something for everyone.”
