Historic Sliabh na mBan armoured car to go on public display at Glasnevin for one day only this Sunday

The historic Sliabh na mBan armoured car, which formed part of General Michael Collins’ convoy at Béal na Bláth on the day he was killed in August 1922, will be on public display at Glasnevin Cemetery for one day only this Sunday (16th) as part of the annual Collins Griffith Commemoration.

Members of the public will have a special opportunity to see the historic 1920 Rolls-Royce armoured car at Glasnevin as people gather to remember General Michael Collins and President Arthur Griffith.

Preserved by the Defence Forces, Sliabh na mBan holds a unique place in Irish history.

It formed part of Collins’ convoy during the journey through West Cork that culminated in the ambush at Béal na Bláth on 22 August 1922.

Independent Senator Michael McDowell will deliver the keynote oration at the grave of General Michael Collins, while historian Professor Michael Laffan will deliver an address at the grave of President Arthur Griffith.

The Defence Forces will also participate in the ceremony, with Brigadier General Mark Staunton, Commander, Joint Cyber Defence Command, laying a wreath on behalf of the Defence Forces.

The commemoration will begin at 1.00pm, with attendees asked to be in place by 12.45pm.

The ceremony will include the raising of the National Flag, a procession led by the Defence Forces, wreath-laying ceremonies, the Last Post and Reveille, and the National Anthem.

The Collins/Griffith Commemoration has taken place annually since 1923, honouring the lives and legacies of two of the key figures in Ireland’s struggle for independence and the foundation of the Irish State.

The event is organised by the Collins/Griffith Commemoration Society in partnership with Dublin Cemeteries Trust.

The commemoration is free, non-political and open to everyone. Members of the public are very welcome to attend.
