Irish Guide Dogs re-open applications for Assistance Dog Programme Waiting list

Irish Guide Dogs has announced that applications for its Assistance Dog Programme waiting list will re-open on Monday, 23rd March 2026, as the organisation celebrates a significant milestone – its 50th anniversary.

Applications will be accepted exclusively online via the Irish Guide Dogs website on March 23rd, and will be open for a 12-hour period from 9.00am to 9.00pm. No applications will be accepted outside of this timeframe.

Speaking ahead of the opening, Tim O’Mahony, CEO of Irish Guide Dogs, said: “We are particularly proud to open the waiting list this year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary.

“Over the past five decades, Irish Guide Dogs has transformed the lives of more than 2,000 families and individuals through the provision of Guide, Assistance and Community Dogs.”

Irish Guide Dogs launched Europe’s first dedicated Assistance Dog Programme for children with autism in 2005, setting new standards in training excellence, dog welfare, and long-term family support.

Since then, the organisation has built a strong reputation for quality and impact, becoming Ireland’s largest and most successful Assistance Dog Programme for children with autism.

“Our Assistance Dogs provide life-changing support for children and their families, promoting independence, confidence, and safety,” Mr O’Mahony added.

“The demand for our services continues to grow, and we encourage families considering an application to review requirements in advance of the opening date.”

Families and individuals interested in applying are advised to visit the Irish Guide Dogs website ahead of March 23rd, where full details of the application criteria and an extensive FAQ section are available.

In addition, several free webinars will take place in advance of the opening, providing parents with the opportunity to learn more about the programme and ask questions directly to the Irish Guide Dogs team.
