In a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and light, the Mansion House, home of Dublin’s democracy since 1715, hosted a civic Diwali celebration on Monday, led by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam.
The event brought together community leaders, faith representatives, families, and friends from across the city for a night of music, dance, rangoli art, festive food, and the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Guests included His Excellency H.E. Akhilesh Mishra, Ambassador of India to Ireland, alongside members of Dublin’s Indian community and representatives from across Ireland.
Addressing the gathering, the Lord Mayor said, “Dublin celebrates Diwali—proudly and publicly—in the people’s house. Diwali’s message is timeless: light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, hope over fear. Tonight, we honour the Irish Indian community whose enterprise, creativity and family life enrich our city every day, and we affirm a Dublin that welcomes, learns and shines brighter when new lights join our skyline.”
The Lord Mayor added, “This celebration reflects my three-pillar mayoral strategy: A Living City where every neighbour feels at home; an Active City alive with culture, sport and creativity; and an Engaged City where every community is seen and heard. Opening the Mansion House for Diwali is a statement of intent—Dublin’s civic spaces are for all of Dublin. Shubh Deepawali – Happy Diwali.”
The evening began with the ceremonial lighting of a diya at the Mansion House entrance by the Lord Mayor and Ambassador Mishra. Attendees enjoyed a festive meal, a classical Kathak dance performance by Saloni Jain, and a digital Mandala projection illuminating the Mansion House façade.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu tradition. It symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Celebrated by millions worldwide, Diwali is a time of joy, reflection, and unity.
This civic celebration reflects Dublin City Council’s commitment to embracing cultural diversity and fostering inclusive civic spaces. By opening the Mansion House to Diwali, the city honours the contributions of the Irish-Indian community and celebrates the values that unite us all.
