Taoiseach Micheál Martin has appointed deputy leader Jack Chambers as the party’s director of elections for the upcoming presidential election.
Chambers will be tasked with securing a victory for Fianna Fáil’s candidate, former Dublin GAA boss Jim Gavin, as Fianna Fáil looks to win its first presidential election since 1997.
Chambers was director of elections for last year’s local and European elections, where Fianna Fáil became the biggest party in Ireland at a local level and tied with Fine Gael to win 4 European seats.
For his efforts, Chambers was named Minister for Finance in July 2024 after Michael McGrath was named as European Commissioner.
The Dublin West TD also served as director of elections as Fianna Fáil recorded its best set of general election results since 2007 last November, with the party winning 48 seats nationwide.
Commenting on his appointment, An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD “I am delighted to appoint Minister Jack Chambers as director of elections.”
“His experience and knowledge of every constituency as well as our party’s organisation across the country will be a huge asset to Jim Gavin’s campaign. He is looking forward to running a positive campaign with Jim so that our candidate can meet as many people as possible across the island. Jim will fight a positive, strong and vibrant campaign.”
Chambers commented, “I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as director of elections by Taoiseach Micheál Martin for the upcoming presidential election campaign. Jim Gavin is a person of integrity, humility and distinction, with a strong record of public service throughout his life and career,” he said.
“I know Jim has demonstrated a clear passion and determination to further serve his country at the very highest level. I believe he would make an exceptional President of Ireland and I look forward to building a strong and energetic community campaign the length and breadth of Ireland, where we can share his vision with people in communities across our country in the coming weeks.”
