SVP seeks volunteers in Dublin

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) is recruiting volunteers in Dublin to support its home visitation work – offering much-needed companionship, a listening ear, and practical help to people facing tough times.

Through SVP’s local conferences, volunteers meet individuals and families in their homes, help them explore options, and connect them with supports.

A typical commitment is just a couple of hours a week, with full guidance from experienced members.

Nessan Vaughan, a SVP volunteer in Dublin, said: ‘I have had a long-term interest in justice, human rights, equality and poverty.

“I read extensively and reflected on these issues, but there was something missing: action!

“I found it in the Society of St Vincent de Paul by joining my local visitation conference.

“From day one I was made to feel welcome and an equal member.

“We meet weekly to review requests and agree how best to help and then, most importantly, we visit (in pairs) people in their homes to bring practical support.

“Home visitation is at the heart of our work.

“These encounters can be transformative.

“The help we provide can radically change a person’s situation, and we often change too.

“I have been so inspired by fellow volunteers and by the families we meet.

“There are no formal qualifications to volunteer with SVP, kindness, compassion and empathy are sufficient.”

SVP supports people experiencing poverty across Ireland through practical assistance and friendship delivered by local volunteer conferences.

SVP’s home visitation teams are particularly active around Christmas, when many families feel the pressure of extra costs.
