Sinn Féin Group Leader on Dublin City Council Daithí Doolan has received confirmation that 126 Dublin households face homelessness after the government has Dublin City Council’s Tenant In Situ Scheme by €22 million.
Minister for Housing, James Browne, has cut the budget for acquisitions to €95 million.
Doolan called the cuts “callous,” and “will only add to the spiralling homeless figures.”
Doolan confirmed that Dublin City Council has not processed any Tenant In Situ scheme applications received in 2025 due to funding restraints.
“This cut will also affect the council’s ability to acquire housing for households with disability, older persons requiring urgent housing and the Buy and Renew Scheme. It is a shortsighted cut with long term negative effects,” the Ballyfermot-Drimnagh councillor said.
“The Tenant In Situ scheme was a very effective homeless prevention tool. It allowed local authorities buy homes from landlords who were carrying out no fault evictions. Last year alone 350 households were prevented from becoming homelessness,” he noted.
“Homelessness in Dublin has hit the shameful record high of 11,421. This includes 3,666 children. This number is sure to spiral without the Tenant In Situ scheme in place.”
“This government is no longer just not working with us; they are now actively working against Dublin City Council. Minister Browne is not part of the solution, he has become part of the problem.
“I am calling on Minister James Browne to immediately reinstate funding for the Tenant In Situ scheme and to develop and broaden this successful homeless prevention tool.”
