Doherty criticises Trump “political stunt” over tariffs

Fine Gael MEP Regina Doherty has said Europe must respond with “calm strength” to Donald Trump’s threat of 30% tariffs.
The bombshell announcement, which has shaken confidence in Irish markets, saw Trump change his mind, once again, on a major decision; on April 1st, he announced tariffs on the European Union would be 20%.
“Trump is back to political stunts. Europe doesn’t do stunts. We do strategy,” Doherty remarked.
Doherty, who serves on a high-ranking tax committee in Europe, will be holding a meeting in Dublin next week to calm nerves.
“We need to make sure Ireland’s voice is heard at the heart of Europe’s strategy. That is why I am bringing the Tax Committee to Dublin. Ireland is one of the most open, trading economies in the world. Tariffs will do real damage. Our concerns, and our priorities, will be part of the EU’s next steps,” she said.
“Our priority now must be to keep talks going and reach an agreement that upholds EU-US trade. Escalation helps no one. We need stability in global trade, and that means staying at the table, listening, and working through this in a way that protects jobs and supports long-term cooperation. Across Ireland there is real fear over the future for jobs, communities, and investment.”
Doherty also highlighted the importance of long-term thinking in turbulent times.
“We are modernising tax rules, closing loopholes and building a more resilient economy. It may not grab headlines, but this is the work that benefits people, businesses and jobs. Europe’s strength lies in staying calm, focused, and ready.”
