The inaugural AGM of the Irish Professional Footballers Benevolent Association (IPFBA) was held in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone on Saturday.

Members were told that €63,000 has been raised by the association during its 18 months in existence with the first donations being made to former footballers in need by the end of the year.

The IPFBA was established in January, 2024 with the aim of assisting ex-professional players who face challenges in their lives.

“The IPFBA has broken new ground in Irish football by firmly establishing itself as the first ever footballers’ benevolent association aimed at helping former League of Ireland professionals who require help,” said Harry McCue, chair of the IPFBA.

“This is down to the hard work of so many of our members that now numbers 250 with the aim of doubling that total in the coming years.

“Sadly, there are players right across the country who once thrilled fans in the League but now find themselves suffering from the long term affects of injuries sustained during their careers or facing financial or health problems.

“We are now inviting applications from ex-players or their families and friends to seek financial assistance and we aim to make our first payments by the end of this year.”

Harry McCue was re-elected as chair with Linda Gorman (vice-chair), Martin Lawlor (secretary) and Mick Byrne (treasurer) also returned to office.
