Tributes pour in for Garda Kevin Flatley

Tributes have been pouring in from across the country following the death of Garda Kevin Flatley, who was struck by a motorcycle while carrying out a checkpoint in the Lanestown area yesterday afternoon.

Garda Flatley, aged 49, was a member of the Roads Policing Unit based at Dublin Castle and had served with distinction for more than 26 years.
His tragic death marks the 90th time a member of An Garda Síochána has lost their life in the performance of duty.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of his colleague.
“My thoughts, and the thoughts of all personnel in An Garda Síochána, are with Kevin’s family and friends,” he said.
“We also think of Kevin’s colleagues at the Roads Policing Unit, Dublin Castle. Kevin, 49 years of age, has over 26 years of dedicated service to An Garda Síochána and the people of Ireland.
“Garda Kevin Flatley is the 90th member of An Garda Síochána killed in the performance of duty.
“Kevin was on duty this afternoon, serving the public by endeavouring in keeping them safe on our roads. His death is a terrible reminder of the dangers faced by Gardaí.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said he was “deeply shocked” by the news and offered heartfelt condolences to Garda Flatley’s loved ones.
“Very sadly, this brave Garda has died in the line of duty, serving and protecting the community,” he said.
“I know his death will bring heartbreak to his family, friends, loved ones and his colleagues in An Garda Síochána across the whole country.”
He continued: “The women and men of An Garda Síochána go out to work every day to keep Ireland safe. They put the welfare of others ahead of themselves, as they work to shield us from harm and to strengthen our communities.”
Minister Darragh O’Brien said Garda Flatley had set out to serve the public that day and paid the ultimate price.
“To lose his life in such circumstances is devastating,” he said. “My heartfelt sympathies are with his family, friends and all his colleagues across An Garda Síochána at this incredibly difficult time.”
Minister Seán Canney highlighted the dangers Gardaí face daily. “This terrible loss is a reminder of the risks Gardaí face every day in their efforts to keep our roads and communities safe,” he said.
Labour’s justice spokesperson, Alan Kelly, said the incident was “deeply shocking” and that the whole country stood in sorrow.
“Our Gardaí are there to protect and serve us, as guardians of the peace. Every day they risk their lives on our behalf.
“I am so sad for the tragic loss his family and fellow members must cope with. In particular, I am thinking of his wife and young children this evening,” he said.
Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee, who represents Dublin Fingal West, said Garda Flatley’s long and loyal service should be remembered with pride.
“We can only remind ourselves of the bravery, dedication and safeguarding Garda Flatley gave to our community when faced with these difficult times,” she said.
“The loss of his presence will be felt by his colleagues in the Road Policing Unit in Dublin Castle, along with his selfless commitment to protecting others.”
Archbishop Michael Jackson also offered his condolences and called for prayers following the news of the tragedy.
“I wish to express my shock and to call for prayers to remember Garda Flatley, and express my condolences to Kevin’s wife and two children,” he said.
“My prayerful sympathies are with the families, friends and colleagues of all who have been affected by the tragic incident in which his life was lost this afternoon.”
As the country comes to terms with this devastating loss, the public outpouring of grief stands as a testament to Garda Kevin Flatley’s courage, commitment and sacrifice.
He is survived by his wife, two children, extended family, and many heartbroken colleagues.
