Government cuts to Tenant in Situ scheme “heartless” says Doolan

Dublin City Council will receive less funding this year for Tenant In Situ scheme than it did in 2024.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Dublin City Council will receive €95 million in funding for 2025, down from the €117 million it received in 2024.
Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan said “this is cruel, mean and heartless. It will have an immediate and negative effect on those facing eviction this year.”
“Dublin City Council will now receive €95m for this year. This massive cut means that the council will run out of money before the end of the year. This is totally unacceptable.”
Doolan noted that the cuts to the Tenant in Situ Scheme comes days after the number of people in homeless and emergency accommodation in Dublin hit another all-time record high, with nearly 11,000 people in Dublin included in the figures.
“The Tenant In Situ scheme was an essential tool in preventing homelessness. It allowed local authorities to buy properties from landlords who otherwise would have carried out no fault evictions. Last year hundreds of families were prevented from becoming homeless because of this effective scheme,” the Ballyfermot-Drimnagh councillor said.
“I would urge the Minister, even at this late stage, to reverse his decision and reinstate the scheme in full.”
