Charity says ‘urgent action needed to protect rough sleepers’
Padraig Conlon 06 Jan 2025As freezing temperatures grip Ireland, Tiglin, a charity that helps people overcome addiction, homelessness and other life-controlling issues, says it’s calling on the government to intensify efforts to safeguard rough sleepers and those seeking international protection from the life-threatening dangers posed by sub-zero conditions.
Despite existing measures outlined in the Government’s Cold Weather Strategy, some people are still choosing to sleep rough making them highly vulnerable.
In a statement, Tiglin said:
“Ireland’s rough sleepers face dire conditions.
“While the Cold Weather Strategy ensures the activation of additional emergency beds during extreme weather, the idea of only prioritising additional beds in cold weather times only highlights poor planning.
“Bed provision should not be dictated by weather, it should be dictated by demand.
“Latest figures from the Department of Housing show over 15,000 individuals in emergency accommodation, with more sleeping rough.
“The situation is particularly acute for individuals seeking international protection, many of whom are housed in temporary conditions or face delays in accessing suitable accommodation.
“These vulnerable populations are especially at risk in severe weather as they get acclimatised to Irish winter weather, culture and how to navigate survival in a new country.
Aubrey McCarthy Chairman of Tiglin called on the public not to forget the homeless during this severe spell of cold weather.
“As temperatures plummet, lives are at stake,” he said.
“Rough sleepers and asylum seekers are not just battling the cold—they are fighting for survival.
“Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow warning as -5C is forecast and has highlighted concerns for motorists and animals during this time.
“Let us not forget the homeless, the unhoused during this high risk time’”
Tiglin is urging:
Community Involvement: We urge the public to report anyone they are concerned for who is sleeping rough to their local authority. If you are based in Dublin, you can make use of the ‘Dublin Rough Sleeper App’ where you will be able to notify the relevant authorities of the location of the individual of concern.
Hope Through Collaboration: The charity acknowledges the efforts of local authorities, NGOs, and volunteers working tirelessly in these challenging conditions. However, a unified approach that includes long-term solutions to the housing crisis is essential to prevent tragedies on our streets with those who are homeless.
The freezing conditions serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for both immediate action and long-term solutions to address homelessness and the challenges faced by vulnerable populations in Ireland.
Tiglin reiterates its call to the government to prioritise proactive planning over reactive measures, ensuring that no individual has to choose between life-threatening conditions and inadequate shelter.
The public’s role is also critical—small acts, such as reporting rough sleepers, can save lives.
Tiglin remains committed to working with authorities, NGOs, and communities to not only provide immediate relief during these severe weather events but also to advocate for sustainable solutions to end homelessness.
Together, we can ensure that no one is left out in the cold.
